or read on to find out which ones we recommend, and why…

With new Kindle covers being released for both the Kindle 4 and the keyboard Kindle 3 all the time, we thought it would be worth having a little round up of the very best cases, covers and sleeves available today:

Here are our top 3 covers for each type of Kindle.

Best New Kindle 4 Covers

Please note we find amazon is still the best place to purchase covers, in terms of both price, quality and most importantly perhaps, fit.

Belkin Grip Kindle Sleeve

1 Belkin Grip Kindle Sleeves

First up is the Belkin Grip Neoprene Sleeve for the new Kindle. We have a few reasons for choosing this particular model:

  1. The price. So many great covers and cases cost too much (we believe) when you consider the low price of the new eReader itself. At the time of writing these Grip sleeves are being sold for under 15 quid which we think is a bit more realistic.
  2. The grippy panel on the front means you really cannot seem to drop your reader, even on the busy tube!
  3. Good colour choices.
  4. Zips up securely.
  5. Good padding – but not overly large or heavy.
  6. The Kindle slides out totally for reading. Personally I am not a fan of those covers which add corner tabs or straps to keep the device in place. The best reading pleasure is surely to be had with the “naked” Kindle, light and ergonomic – and with such a sleeve that’s exactly what you get.
  7. Neoprene construction gives you some degree of protection against liquids and means it is hand washable.

2 Built Kindle Sleeves

Built Kindle SleeveWe have loved these since the beginning. The new slimmer fit for the Kindle 4 has not disappointed. However I have to be honest – the fit isn’t quite as snug as it used to be for the keyboard version. This is because in the US (where the Kindle Touch is actually on sale) Built are selling this cover to suit both the touch and the 4th generation models. They are similar in size, but not identical and it shows. This might be slim but because it is built to hold the slightly larger touch-screen model I wouldn’t go holding it upside-down like I can with the Kindle keyboard version.

I know they are a little on the expensive side. But, these are so convenient, fluffy, fun and colourful I had to include them again!

3 Amazon Leather Kindle Cover

Amazon Kindle CoverYes I know it is pricey! And that is why I tried desperately hard not to include it in our run down of the best new Kindle cases. However, when you look at the alternatives if you are after a book style jacket, this one beats them hands down.

For a start much of the competition relies on corner straps which are untidy and I find annoying since the design of the reader itself is so clean and sleek. Secondly the prices, for anything even approaching half way decent in terms of quality, are usually almost the same. For a few pounds more (and that really is all you’re paying if you want a leather jacket), the Amazon own covers are the better choice.

Best Kindle Keyboard Covers

This is a bit tougher. The fact that the device itself is more expensive means that we are a little more open to spending a bit more on a case for it! Also, since it has been with us for a few years now there is ample choice, from super budget, to high end luxury. But which 3 cases do we recommend?

Read on and find out!

1. Lighted Kindle Keyboard Cover

Kindle Keyboard Lighted CoverThis is pretty pricey I know. But, if you want a decent light it is not actually a bad price.

Because I prefer a sleeve type cover personally I hunted for a reading light that lit the whole screen and didn’t go through batteries like crazy. I eventually settled on an Octovo clip on light instead after trying a few cheaper models. But at around twenty quid for such a good light you can see that the lighted cover itself is priced as you would expect. After all the light is great and importantly, it is always to hand since it slips into the back cover when not being used.

2 Belkin Pleated Kindle Keyboard Sleeve

Belkin Pleated Kindle Keyboard SleeveI like that this is simple, yet really functional. The pleated pocket expands to hold just about anything you could want to accompany your Kindle.

Plus of course it is cheaper!

Because it zips up tight and secure this is the kind of case most suited to a crazy messy hand-bag – nothing is going to get in there and mess up your display!

Personally I don’t see why it is nearly double the price of the Grip version for the smaller reader detailed above – but that’s the only negative I can come up with for these sleeves!

3. Built Kindle Keyboard Sleeves

Built Kindle Keyboard SleeveYes, I’ve mentioned these before! But the simple style and amazing tight fit just keeps me coming back to the Built sleeves for the Kindle keyboard – I am sad enough to own a few colours now though ScatterDot remains the favourite!

As I write these are out of stock. And, it seems a lot of other previously popular keyboard covers are out of stock too. I wonder if the manufacturers know something we can only suspect… is the Kindle keyboard to disappear from the UK store sometime soon?

I wouldn’t be surprised so if you want a new cover for a keyboard model I guess it is probably time to act fast if you want any choice!

Well it cannot be long before the Kindle 4 is released.  To date we cannot be sure what Amazon have in store for gadget fans.  One thing that we can definitely be sure of though, is that if you buy one you will also need to buy a new Kindle 4 cover for it, as there is no chance that the current crop of cases and sleeves will fit a new generation Amazon reader!

Kindle 4 Ideas

There are countless possibilities, and so far Amazon are letting nothing slip.  But could the next generation reader be significantly different to the current version?  We thinks so for sure:

Touch Screen Reader

Since Amazon bought out TouchCo in 2010 the rumour mill has been waiting for a touch-screen Kindle.  If that were to be in the cards then no cases currently produced are likely to fit.  After all the entire size of the device would probably be reduced, getting rid of the keypad used currently could knock inches off the overall size of the reader.

A Colour Kindle

colour hanvon readerIt is perfectly possible for Amazon to use a colour e-ink display for their ebook reader.  It would have the same low energy, and easy to read display, but could show full colour.  The drawback is that currently e-ink screens just do not show the vibrant colours we are used too.  You can see colour e-ink in action here.   The picture shows it used by Chinese ebook reader builder Hanvon.

Although it is impressive it just doesn’t wow like colourful LCD back-lit displays do.  Great for a newspaper but not so interesting for children’s stories, and frankly we really don’t see Amazon going down this route at the moment since we don’t think consumers will want to pay a premium for muted colours.

Kindle Tablet

It seems more likely that Amazon will simply produce a tablet or two.  We’re hearing at the moment that two such products are imminent.  A Kindle for Movies with a large 10″ display and super fast processor, and an entry level 7″ tablet that might just be the long awaited colour Kindle.

Expect these tablets to change significantly over the next few years.  Hybrid displays using both LCD and e-ink are in the works and would mean a tablet could finally function as a dedicated ebook reader, properly, without tiring your eyes and keeping you up at night!

Kindle 4 Covers

Whatever shape the new Kindle comes in, we’ll be investigating all the very best cases and covers on offer to protect it!  There should be heaps of them since the Kindle is proving so exceptionally popular in the UK.

For a unique take on the ubiquitous Kindle jacket, check out the M-Edge Latitude Kindle covers available here.

Jacket style covers are great, but sometimes they don’t quite offer up as much protection as we might like for the device inside.  The Latitude cover from M-Edge combines a jacket form, with a much more protective carry case or sleeve.

m-edge kindle coversWhen open the Latitude is similar in form to the Trip Kindle cover.   Four corner straps keep the Kindle in place and provide access to all the controls.

When shut, things are very different and altogether more sporty.  With its tough nylon exterior and double zipper this case is going to really protect the device.  It’s not waterproof but you can see that even the odd spill should be repelled well enough.  Because the zips keep the whole thing closed properly there is no danger of anything getting inside the cover and damaging the screen when your Kindle is riding in your bag.

The double zipper also means you can charge the ebook reader whilst still in its nearly completely closed case.  And, if that wasn’t enough you can also use the zips to secure the case open as well as closed, which makes for comfortable one handed reading with no cover flapping around in the way.

Inside is soft fleece lining to help avoid scratches.  Between the nylon outer and fleece lining is a strong core material to absorb shocks and bumps.

The M-Edge Latitude is definitely a practical Kindle cover.  On the front is a large zip up pocket that will expand out to hold all sorts of stuff including the charger.  At the back is a flatter profile pocket that will happily hold your M-Edge book light if you have one.

M-Edge are so confident that all their covers are such good quality that they offer a life-time warranty on the entire range.  Customer reviews of the Latitude Kindle cover can be found via the links at the top of the page.  The brand is still not one of the most well known in the UK.  But on the US site over 300 reviews have already been written by customers, giving the case an average 4.5 out of 5 stars, impressive indeed!

The M-Edge Trip Kindle cover range includes four great colours.  Designed to be light, comfortable to hold and offer great protection, these are a great choice for anyone wanting a good quality Kindle jacket.

The M-Edge Trip covers are some of the best selling cases for the Kindle reader in the US, and they are gaining popularity in the UK too.  This is largely down to the simple design being so well executed.  They offer good quality protection at a reasonable price, and in a good range of colours too.

kindle jackets from m-edgeWeighing in at only just over 5 ounces these aren’t going to spoil your reading experience.  The front cover folds back completely and can be held in place using the over-sized elastic strap which makes for a really comfortable one handed reading experience.

m-edge trip kindle cover in pinkThe exterior is hard wearing canvas that has been given a ScotchGard™ coating so it should repel stains and be simple to keep looking as good as new.  Inside is a soft cream microsuede lining that is perfect for ensuring the display remains free from scratches.

The four corner tabs that keep the ebook reader locked in place are tight enough to be secure, and small enough to stay out of the way so that you can access all controls.  The power slider is quite near the top corner tab though, which some people might find annoying but it is something that is always the case with this style of jacket.

If you want a reading light to enjoy using your ebook reader at night, this case is compatible with the e-Luminator Booklight from M-Edge.  The flat arm of the reading light slips into the small pocket on the right of the Kindle so you always have your light handy, a little like buying one of the lighted Kindle covers, but cheaper (though you will need to consider batteries.

If you want something similarly high quality, with a more sporty look check out the M-Edge Latitude Kindle cover instead.

All in all, we are pretty impressed with the M-Edge Trip Kindle Cover.  You can view all customer reviews for this particular ebook reader case by clicking the image at the top.
